著于民国七十年的这套《英国文学史》,是除梁实秋先生译莎士比亚全集外,最重要的学术遗产了。可惜不管是莎士比亚全集还是梁先生的各种散文集子,大陆都有印售,唯独这套三卷本惶惶巨著(以及配套的三卷本英国文学选读)始终不见于书市。 诚然,大陆自改革开放以来,英国文学史的写作和翻译芳兴不艾,从早先陈嘉先生的英文四卷本《英国文学史》到前两年才出毕的由王佐良、李赋宁等老先生主持的五卷本《英国文学史》,可谓成果斐然,而近期又见南开大学正组织编写更为完备详细的英国文学史,实在令人期待。书店里的文学史选择面广了,读者的眼界自然也扩大不少,于是梁先生的这套文学史,似乎对于大陆读者来说也是可有可无。究竟书写于三十多年前,从史事资料到评述观点,对于当代读者来说,并无多大新意,倒是让人觉得一些评述难免显得陈旧而老生常谈。 确实,若是从学术角度来看,此文学史当是不入攻读英国文学的学生之目,翻遍全书恐怕也难找到有新意的观点和理论来支持和丰富自己的论文。但我所惊异于的是其流畅和典雅的行文,可谓是我所读过中文版英国文学史之最。梁老著此文学史,以近暮年,当是倾注了毕生对西洋文学之感情。学术著作却毫无学术文章的一板一眼,而更是与他的美文一脉相承,随意一段读来都可亲可爱,这样的文字,我在王佐良的《英国散文的流变》中亦有感触。 摘录其中介绍Chaucer的一段: 巢塞(Geoffrey Chaucer),生于一三四0年至一三四五年间,卒于一四00年,当十四世纪之后半叶,是第一位伟大的英国诗人,常被称为“英国文学之父”,同时他也是第一位伟大的英国幽默作家与写实作家。巢塞早年受中古宫廷生活的熏陶,毕生担任许多项的公职,屡次奉使国外,犹能写成那样多的作品,不能不说是奇迹。巢塞写作的时代,正式英文取代法文而成为正式官方文字的时候,而伦敦通行的东部中区(East Midland)方言正是近代英文演变之所自,巢塞使用这个方言作为他的写作媒介,再加上他的才华、睿识和强盛的创造力,遂成为英国文学史上第一位有长久影响力的作家。
